The Old Stables

THE OLD STABLES, EGLINGHAM

Completed in spring 2026, this project involved the sensitive extension into the former walled courtyard at the Grade II listed Old Stables into an additional bedroom with en-suite facilities and utility area enhancing the building’s functionality while preserving its historic character.

The small courtyard, previously underutilised and heavily shaded by the high walls and surrounding mature trees, offered an opportunity to create new accommodation within the existing envelope of the building. The design approach focused on minimal intervention, retaining the enclosed stone walls and respecting the original form and spatial hierarchy of the stables.

The built form was designed with a flat roof to sit discreetly behind the existing stone outer walls to avoid any visual change on the street facing elevation and to the garden side, the existing openings were sensitively utilised to maximise natural light while maintaining the integrity and form of the original openings.

The result is a high-quality, characterful space while meeting modern standards of comfort. The scheme demonstrates how thoughtful adaptation can secure the long-term use of heritage assets without compromising their significance.
